LOCAL BOARD'S COMMENT

Members of the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Board, who met this morning, complained that they had not been advised of the details of the major scheme adopted for the improvement of the Hutt Road. The chairman of the board (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) said that the board had agreed to find £8600 for the original scheme and could not be asked to increase that contribution now that the scheme had been extended, but he thought they should have been advised of the altered plans. Mr. Hislop read a letter from the City Engineer (Mr. K. E. Luke) which stated that he had .inspected the road work and it appeared that a much more elaborate plan had been embarked upon than was originally intended. As the road was under the control of the City and Suburban Highways Board he considered the board should' have been advised of the changes. The City Council was also concerned because the water mains were carried along the road. Mr. Hislop said he had no idea what the present scheme would cost but the board had only undertaken to find £8600. He did not know what was involved regarding water mains. A QUICK DECISION. Mr. Luke said the decision to drop the original "piecemeal" scheme and launch into a major scheme had been so quickly made that plans were not available. The decision to undertake a major scheme had been made because it was found to be cheaper to do the job while the Ngahauranga Gorge road work was in progress. He had at first been concerned about the super-eleva-tion at the junction between the Hutt Koad and the Ngahauranga Gorge road, but the scheme included the removal of some shops and houses to make a rounded sweep towards Wellington from the gorge road.
