THETIS TRAGEDY
NATIONAL FUND
FOR MEN'S DEPENDANTS
APPEAL BY MAYOR
The Mayor of Wellington has today received the following cable from the Lord Mayor of London: —
"In response to nation-wide requests I am at once launching a national appeal for the benefit of dependants of the men lost in the submarine Thetis. May I ask your valuable co-operation by opening a supporting fund? Letter follows. Bowater, Lord Mayor of London."
"I am sure," says Mr. Hislop, "that my fellow citizens will gladly embrace the opportunity of subscribing to this fund. I accordingly invite subscriptions to be sent marked 'Thetis Fund' to the Town Hall or to the "Evening Post" or the "Dominion" newspapers. "As I have only just received the cable I am not yet able to announce the subscription of the Wellington City Council. This I shall do as soon as I have had the opportunity of communicating with members of the council.
"It will, I am sure, be some consolation to the relatives of the brave men who have lost their lives in a national cause to know that tributes to them in the form of subscriptions to their relatives come from all quarters of the British Commonwealth of Nations."
