SURVOY ON THE POST

GREAT NORTHERN

CHARADE SUCCEEDS AGAIN

(By Telegraph.) (Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, June 5,

A thrilling finish to the Great! Northern Steeplechase and a dividend of over three figures were the high lights of the second day of the Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern Meeting today. Backers generally experienced a very poor run, only two actual first fancies being successful. In contrast Eka Pai returned a three-figure dividend, and Ellanui, Farland, and Jewelled Girdle paid over double figures. The racing was well contested throughout, but in the majority of instances comfortable wins were recorded. BRIDEGROOM'S DOUBLE. After his fine showing of the first day Bridegroom was sorted out as the best of good things in the Hunt Club Cup, and so he proved. He was allowed to bowl along well within himself over the first part, and even though British Sovereign momentarily headed him seven furlongs from home it was only on sufferance. He is a very promising horse, and likely to be a tip-top 'chaser with experience. British Sovereign ran an honest race without looking like doing any better, but the others were never possibilities, Tupeotu being twenty-five lengths away third. Windsor Lass fell and Car Leaf ran off. EKA PAI'S SURPRISE. A rare surprise was in store for backers when Eka Pai came from behind the leaders to win the Ranfurly Handicap in decisive fashion and return over a century on the win machine. He has done comparatively little racing, but he shaped like a more than useful galloper today. Bronze •Moth jumped out with the field, occupying sixth place until the turn, where he made a fast run that landed him in front, but he weakened just i short of the post. Vaalsstar was fairly I prominent throughout, and battled on to pay over a score on the place machine. Kaspian missed the jumpout, and failed to show up afterwards. Tahiti, Noisy Night, and Spearford showed a lot of speed. FORM CONFIRMED. Charade confirmed her Great Northern running with a comfortable win in the-Remuera Hurdles. She was out in front for the last mile, and she jumped splendidly, with but one exception, when she clouted the second fence in the straight thefirsttime.Biform was kept under restraint over the early part, but he commenced a forward move passing the five furlongs, and he did well to be second. Erination again carried his big impost well and battled on very courageously. Agog was sore, before he paraded and could not hit out at any stage. Inness Lad hit the second fence from home, but he did not look a winner at any stage. SOUTHERNER'S TRIUMPH. The Great Northern Steeplechase provided one of the most thrilling finishes in the history of the race with Survoy and Power Chief flashing past the post together. Survoy would have been unlucky to be beaten, for he hit two fences on the last round very hard but recovered in great style. At the top of the hill the last time he was standing Power Chief up five lengths but he made a particularly fast run coming down, which landed him on terms. From the final obstacle the pair settled down to a rare battle, and it was only in the last stride that Survoy gained the verdict. He was splendidly handled by A. E. Ellis, who has not ridden «over fences since piloting Padishah in the Grand National Hurdles last August. 9 Power Chief disputed the lead with John Charles for well over three miles, and he was, far from disgraced, his clean fencing being a feature of the race. Although Smiling Thru finished third she never looked like doing better and it was only her stamina that secured her that position. John Charles had every chance but failed over the last couple of furlongs. En Tour ran a fair race for fourth, but Bryce Street was always tailed off, eventually being I pulled up. Roxy and Gascyne fell, and Irish Comet was pulled up lame. FARLAND AT HIS BEST. In the leading three from the outset, Farland finished with rare dash to return over a score on the win machine in the King George Handicap, and it was his best performance to date. He was hard held to the turn, where he made his effort on the inside. Royal Bachelor attempted to lead all the way, and it was not until well inside the distance that he surrendered that post. From the Press stand third position appeared to be occupied by Inver, but he was not placed in the first f our.« Aero King appeared to weaken just short of the post. Royeyrus had every chance. Old Surrey did not get out well, but Prince Acre, Marie's Acre, and Anion were well placed all the way. Black Thread and Lady Meath were making up ground after being slow away. FROM END TO END. Ellanui led all the way in the Panmure Hurdles to score a clear-cut win from the favourite, Loombination, who had every chance but could not make any impression on the winner. Little Briton, fifth early, was up third at the turn and was in that position at the judge. Right Royal looked certain to be in the picture when he came to grief two fences from home. Devon was very, disappointing. Ureklaw and King Musk had every chance. DOUBLE FIGURES AGAIN. After occupying second place for the greater portion of the journey, Jewelled Girdle came through at the distance to win the Carbine Plate in solid style. He was the fourth doublefigure winner of the day. Raana did not get away too well, but he _ received a clear run from the straight entrance. Hessketoon battled on to secure third money after being handy throughout. Inquisitor was making up ground after a slow beginning. Saccone was left standing, but he was raced up handy quickly, and, as might be expected, ha could not go on with it. He was possibly a good thing beaten. Midland failed to stay.
