SPECTATORS ABOARD

A STEEPLECHASE FIASCO

(li.v Telegraph—Press Association.)

HASTINGS, June 5.

An unusual and humorous finish marked the Park Steeplechase at the Napier Meeting today, when three of the four starters fell. All completed the first round, but at the second fence, the stand double. The Tramp crashed, his rider. J. Kerr. falling clear. At the next fence Begorrah fell, and at the second to last fence Kikiroki tipped over, leaving Wykemist, who was then running second, well back, the only horse standing.

The first sensation was provided when a spectator mounted Begorrah and set out to complete the course. Seeing this, another spectator mounted Kikiroki, who jumped two fences and secured second money.

Meanwhile The Tramp's rider, Kerr, seeing the possibility of third money, remounted and set off in chase of Begorrah, who was being slowly and care fully ridden by the spectator, a jockey. However, when The Tramp showed up, Begorrah's rider made a race of it. and the pair cleared the remaining fences together and raced hard down the straight to the post. In an exciting finish Begorrah and the spectator rider won by half a head. The crowd cheered the gallant effort.
