AUSTRALIAN HARDWOOD

Although, the demand for Australian hardwoods in New Zealand, where they are used principally for telegraph and power poles, is a^ays heavy, the value of timber imported under this heading in March was exceptionally high. The Australian hardwoods were worth (in New Zealand currency) £123.705. according to figures supplied' by the Customs Department. Rough sawn and rough hewn timber accounted for £53.940 of the total and sleepers for £68.817. Among the other imports. in March, oak from Japan . was worth £ 1939; Canadian timbers (mainly Douglas fir), £1483; and American (mainly redwood) £224. Values of the Dominion's exports of timber were:—To Australia. £9397; Pacific Islands (timber for cases). £3551; United Kingdom, £219.
