OPENING NIGHT

ATHENIAN CLUB RESUMES

The 1939 winter series of fortnightly dance socials of the Wellington Athenian Club Inc., was recently launched at the Assembly Hall, Brougham Street, before an enthusiastic gathering of old and new members and friends. A lengthy dance programme interspersed with special items had been arranged by the subcommittee which comprised Mrs. W. Band, the Misses R. Walshaw and D. Blucher, Messrs. R. Walshaw, W. Band, and H. Strangemure (controller). Their efforts met with conspicuous success, auguring well for future entertainments.

The guests were received on behalf of the executive, by the president, Mr. E. Loader, and Mrs. Loader, who was wearing a frock of black floral georgette with fuchsia toning. New members and officials from kindred clubs were warmly welcomed. The Orphans' Club was represented by Messrs. R. Roffe and Aveling, the Charley's Aunt Club by Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Moores, Mr. E. W. Ombler, and Miss Dutton, and the Jewish Club by Mr. and Mrs. H. Cane and Mr. and Mrs. Zucker. Mrs. Loader was presented with a bouquet from all present.

The hall retained its formal cabaret lay-out, the tables having cloths and vases in rainbow hues, each one being centred by poppies and chrysanthemums. The walls were hung with Empire flags and slogans, the Athenian Club monograms and colours being conspicuous in the decorations. The club name was stretched in giant letters across the stage, which represented a woodland scene. Those who contributed to the programme were Miss Nannestad (humour), Mr. Cornish (trumpet solos). Mr. and Mrs. Thompson (exhibition dances). Amusing competitions were won by Mr. and Mrs. W. Olsen, and Mr. and Mrs, H. Dodson. The "Lambeth Walk" and "Chestnut Tree" with freak balloons, toys. and fancy streamers, were popular items. A wagon supper was served. The organisers .were specially thanked by the president for their arrangements.
