TO IRON SMOCKING
The appearance of smocking is often spoiled by bad ironing. Here is an infallible way of preventing that fiat, crushed look which often results from careless ironing.
Slightly damp the smocked portions of the garment; then iron the rest of it without allowing the iron to touch the smocking. Now place the edge of garment farthest from the smocking against the table edge. Hold it firmly in place with the knee, and hold the other end of the garment up with the left hand. Run the hot iron along the inside of the garment at the back of the smocking. The hot steam rises, fills out the spaces in the smocking, and restores its original appearance.
