HELP FOR HOUSES
In order to expedite a solution of the housing problem, "A Private Builder's Wife" suggests a reversion to the former subsidy scheme. If the Government, she says, were to otter, say, £50 subsidy on each house undertaken to be built by private builders for letting purposes, for each £ 1000 or £1200 it costs to build a house under it.; own scheme it would provide either 20 or 24 houses to be built by the aforesaid private builders for the cost of one Government house. * At present private builders are severely handicapped by rising costs and building houses is consequently practically at a standstill. On the other hand, there was a record number of marriages last Easter, with poor prospect of- the newly-weds getting a house. The policy of helping the private builder to build houses for rent would most certainly "help build a nation." i
