CRAWFORD CRESCENT

HUTT AND WELLINGTON

The Wellington and Hutt Clubs met for the first time/this; season on Saturday afternoon. The A teams played at the Heretaunga links, which were in beautiful order, the match resulting in a win for Wellington by 6 games to 4 with two games squared. The Crawford Crescent contest between the leading eight pairs resulted in a tie, both sides winning three games with two games squared. The B teams played on the Hutt course. D. H. Graham and I. A. Ewen, . the Wellington and Hutt, No. l's respectively, had an interesting tussle, the former winning 1 up after having a •5 up lead at the seventh hole. They halved the" first in neat 4's, but Ewen played the second hole very badly— had he holed out it could hardly have been for less than B—and Graham won with an indifferent 6. At the short third Graham secured a birdie 2, a long putt going: down; Ewen holed in bogey figures.- Graham took a 3 up lead at the fourth, after Ewen's putting had let him. down. The 200-yard fifth should have been won by the Hutt player, but he "funked" an eighteeninch putt for a win, and the hole was halved. Graham, Splaying splendidly now, secured a 4 at the 450-yard sixth, and a 5 at the 475-yard seventh to have the-commanding lead of 5 up. Ewen improved to win back the eighth and ninth in fair figures to stand 3 down at the turn. After the seventh hole on the outward journey Graham did not win another. He retained his 3up lead on Ewen (who had shown a new lease of life) until the ..fifteenth, where the latter in a bogey 3 to 4 reduced the leeway. Winning the sixteenth in 4 to 5 after Graham had hit a poor drive, Ewn stood only 1 down with two holes to go. Graham, however, halved the last two holes in 4's, and took the match 1 up. The approximate scores were as follows:— Graham.— Out: 462444564—39 In: ............ 445544544—39 . . , .. 78 Ewen.— Out: 483545653—43 In: 445543444—37 80 A. D. S. Duncan (Wellington) and W. B, Reilly (Hutt) were in the No. 2 positions, but the latter gave the best exhibition of the leading four. Duncan was out of touch with his driver while Reilly consistently drove well, the latter being the decisive factor in his win. Reilly went out in 35 to be 2 up at the turn. He increased his lead to 3 up at the tenth, but Duncan won the eleventh and twelfth in 3 and 4 to reduce the leeway by two holes. A neat 5 at the 500-yard thirteenth and a bogey 3.t0 4at the 195-yard fourteenth allowed Reilly to again stand 3 up. The Wellington player won back the fifteenth in par figures and the seventeenth was halved, Reilly winning 2 and 1. The approximate scores were:— Reilly.— Out: 452445443—35 In: 445534454—38 .. . .'
