NEARING MILLION
AMBULANCE, MILAGE
FREEDOM FROM MISHAP
Early in the current financial year the Wellington Free Ambulance vehicles will have travelled one million miles since the service was begun twelve years ago. This was disclosed at the monthly meeting of the board today. The ambulances travelled 100,000 miles during the 1938----39 year, which brings the total to within 70,000 miles of the million mark. The actual figure at the end of March was : 930,309 miles, and the number of cases attended 104,168.
Answering a question by the .chairman (Sir Charles Norwood) the Superintendent (Mr. F. Roffe) said that the ambulances had not been involved in a single accident apart from damage to mudguards in narrow lanes at night.
The chairman said that the figures disclosed the tremendous growth of the organisation, and the freedom from accident was a tribute to the drivers and very gratifying particularly in view of the fact that considerable speed was necessarily involved in some cases.
