The City Engineer's Department is' again calling attention to the necessity for avoiding waste of water. There has been only one good rainfall since the beginning of the year, and the effect of that fall was minimised by the rapid run-off from the parched and hard surface of the watersheds. The Wainui and Orongorongo Streams have again dropped below normal flow and t' artesian wells at Gear Island have been in continuous operation. Though the city bylaws prohibit the casual use of water throughout the year, no rigid interpretation is placed upon the rules except when necessity arises, and that is the position at present. A further warning is therefore given by th. department that prosecutions will follow the illegal use of water. Hoses must not be used unless the water is n.etered and, even so, the hose must not be allowed to un unattended.
