MAORI PARTICIPATION

A well-attended and enthusiastic meeting of over 50 Maori residents m the Hutt Valley, convened and presided over by Mr. Hapi Love sen., was held at the Maori meeting-house to consider the question of the participation of the Maori people of the Hutt Valley in the forthcoming Centenary celebrations. After an interesting discussion on the points-explained by the chairman in connection with the coming events, the following resolution was passed: "That this meeting unanimously agrees I that the Maori people of the Hutt Valley join with the pakehas in celebrating the Centenary of the landing of the first settlers upon these shores " A strong committee was formed to make the various arrangements. The officers elected were as follows:— Chairman, Mr. Hapi Love, sen.; vice chairman, Mr. W. Edwin; secretary, Mrs. G. Te Waari; assistant secretary, Mr. E. Lyal; treasurer, Mr. H. Love, jun. ~ Another resolution passed was the following: "That in connection with the proposed memorial to be erected on the Petone foreshore, the names of our people who welcomed the first settlers be inscribed thereon." The meeting throughout was marked by the greatest of enthusiasm for the project. •
