ATHLETIC SPORTS

PUBLIC SERVICE

BOOT AND QUINN TAKE PART

Beautiful weather prevailed for the holding of the Public Service annual athletic sports at the Basin Reserve, yesterday afternoon. There was a large crowd of spectators, and entries were the highest in the history of the sport. Competition was of a very high standard and times generally were good. Added interest was given to the meeting by the appearance of G. Quinn, national sprint champion, and V P. Boot, New Zealand and New South Wales middle-distance champion, runner. _~/ Among those present were the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry), the Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jones), and the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin). Mr. G. H. Mackley, president of the Public Service Sports Society, introduced Mr. Parry to the gathering. Mr. Mackley said the society would be very pleased at the appearance of the Ministers, who had given up valuable time to be present. MINISTER'S PRAISE. "I am pleased to have the opportunity of being here this afternoon to witness the Public Service annual sports," said' Mr. Parry, "and I must say it is" very pleasing indeed to note that the entries this year are a record for the organisation. It shows the enthusiasm of the Public Service towards the fitness campaign, which is being held at present throughout New Zealand. I must congratulate the association on < the fine contribution it has made this afternoon, for the good finishes we have witnessed, and the particularly pleasing condition of the men taking; part in the sports. I noticed some very fine and quite distinguished young men taking part, and on their physical condition I would like to congratulate I them very heartily indeed. "I am very concerned indeed about i more people running. lam concerned more particularly with more people being able to run a hundred yards in fifteen seconds than producing those who can run a hundred yards in ten seconds. After all, that is only incidental to the great work of physical fitness in our country." Points for the Ward Cup were scored by the various Departments as follows:—Public Service, 1325; Post and Telegraph, 40; Railways, 27£. BOOT'S FINE EFFORT. The only event in which Boot competed was the inter-departmental relay, and his distance, 880 yards, he covered in lmin 58sec, a fine effort considering that he ran alone well ahead of the rest of the field. Agriculture, the- Department for which Boot ran, also had the services of Quinn over the 440, so their success was assured in the relay. Quinn was successful in winning the 100 yards service championship from Adams and Fulton in the excellent time of 10 seconds. A fairly strong southerly wind assisted Quinn considerably in recording the time. He won fairly comfortably. P. Munro came from retirement to record the best distance in the discusthrowing event, although he secured only second place after conceding handicaps. Features of the meeting were the particularly good entries in the distance events and the sportsmanship of a number of entrants in completing the distance although a lap, and in one instance, in the three miles, almost two laps behind. The women's events were well contested, well-known Wellington runners filling most of the places. The finds of the meeting were F. D. Morgan, a sprinter of class, and H. V. Hudson, in the broad jump and the hop, step, and jump. A loud speaker, with Mr. J. King in charge, helped considerably in the smooth conduct of the meeting.
