CARDINALS IN ROME

PRELIMINARIES TO CONCLAVE

(Independent Cable Service.) VATICAN CITY, February 22. The cardinals who have assembled for the conclave for .the election of the new Pope exchanged visits and conferred all day. A survey of the visits showed that Cardinal Massimo Massimi, a legal expert, orator, and author, had the largest number—seventeen. Cardinal Massimi has not previously appeared among the leading candidates for the papacy, but the number of his supporters is believed substantially to exceed yesterday's callers who are known -to favour his election.
