BECOMING OVERCAST
Special forecast for Wellington:—
Light-to-moderate, but freshening, north-westerly winds, Weather fair at-, first, but gradually becoming; overcast. Mild temperatures.-
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for variable winds at first in the lar north, wit" goutherlies predominating. Winds -otherwise will be north-westerly to northerly in direction. They will be light to moderate at first, but will freshen later especially about arid south of Cook Strait. The weather will be fair at first almost generally, but cloud will increase and rain will develop later in the western and southern districts of the South Island, Temperatures will rise. An anticyclone has been moving slowly from the Tasman Sea on to northern New Zealand, Winds yesterday were mainly south-westerly in direction and were very strong in some exposed positions. Today, however, northerljes are general firom Cook Strait southwards and are freshening under the influence of a disturbance advancing from south-east-ern ■■ Australia. Some showers fell in the far south yesterday, but otherwise the weather has continued fair to cloudy with rising temperatures.
Auckland had fair to cloudy weather yesterday, with a fresh south-westerly wind and cool temperatures, the maximum being 65.8 degrees and the minimum 58.5 degrees.
In Wellington it was fine and mild, 12.5 hours of bright sunshine being recorded and the maximum and minimum temperatures were 69.5 and 5-1.3 degrees respectively, There was a strong north-westerly breeze, which decreased in the evening. The weather this morning was becoming cloudy.
In Christchurch yesterday it was fine and warm, a moderate southerly breeze turning to the north-east by noon. The maximum temperature was 73.2 degrees and the minimum 50.3 degrees. The wind this morning was freshening and the weather was cloudy, Punedin has had overcast weather. A strong south-westerly wind was blowing yesterday and a light northeasterly today. PROSPECTS UNSETTLED. The weather in Wellington over the coming weekend is likely to become somewhat unsettled. A vigorous disturbance is approaching, hence winds at first will be' north-westerly. Some rain later is a possibility, but to what extent the disturbance will affect Wellington it is too soon to gauge.
