RUGBY FOOTBALL

PETONE CLUB

The annual report of the Petone Rugby Football Club records that the championships won by the club in 1938 were the senior A and B, third C, fourth A, fifth A, and club championship. Both junior teams finished well up in their respective grade championships, especially the A team, while the fourth B and fifth B were both just behind the leaders in their grades. The fifth B performed so well that at the end of the first round it was second top of the ladder, with the result that it was regraded to the first division of its grade. Even there it gave a good account of itself, and the players had every reason to be proud of their performance. The sixth grade team finished second in its grade, and generally the display gives every encouragement for the future. The past season was the most successful enjoyed by the club since 1907, when all five grade championships were won. The club had retained the Dewar Shield.

The report records with gratification the intention of the Petone Borough Council to erect a grandstand. The Purcell Memorial Cup was won by the, third C team for the most meritorious performance in the club's teams. The club was indebted to the following coaches: —Senior A, A. Miller and lan Harvey; senior. B, J. Lambourn and W. Sundgren; junior A, I. Thompson; junior C, F. Eiffe; third C, E. Edwards; fourth A, H. May; fourth B, D. Tegg; fifth A, A. Lancaster and A.
