WELLINGTON TROTS

PROGRAMME FOR MARCH

The appearance of the programme for the Wellington Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting, to be held on Thursday and Saturday, March 2 and 4, will stimulate interest in trotting circles. The club has maintained its policy of increasing the stakes, and the classes have been arranged to encourage support from both islands.

The chief attraction on the first day will be the Wairarapa Handicap, and the class has been framed at 4.42 which is similar \o that pertaining for the last events at the recent meeting. There is a wealth of talent handicapped about this mark in the Dominion and there is no reason why first-class contests should not be provided. The open sprint, the Hailway Handicap, has been lengthened to 2.52 for a mile and a , quarter, and this allows for a second opportunity for the pacers, who will be providing the stellar attractions.

One pleasing feature of the programme is that the club has thought fit to-put on two fasfcclass trotting events, and this is a move that is to be commended. Too few opportunities are allowed the unhoppled performers, and it seems a pity that clubs do not realise that there is no better sight than a trotter at full stretch. A 3.36 and 3.28 class will prevail on the first day, while on the second day the distances will be lengthened to two miles with limits set at 4.50 and 4.39.

The maiden classes are catered for with two events each day, while satisfactory limits have been framed for the improvers' division.

Entries for all events will close with the secretary, Mr. W. Pere, Petone, at 8 p.m. on Monday next.
