MORE MEN NEEDED

OVERSEA TRADESMEN

TO BE INVITED HERE

The urgency of the housing problem in the Dominion was emphasised today by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), who indicated pretty plainly that the Government intends to import tradesmen from oversea in order that housing construction may be speeded up. Mr. Savage said that caucus would discuss this question fully, but it was not a question of passing resolutions. The position called for immediate action. "Everything that can be done will be done," he said. "We have to get more men, that is sure, and it looks as if we will have to go overseas for them. We have a big job to do." In reply to a question, Mr. Savage said that in order to get the men the Government would advertise overseas, and in the United Kingdom the help of the High Commissioner's Office would be enlisted. Commenting on the caucus now in session, Mr. Savage said that the question of industrial expansion within the Dominion had occupied- considerable attention, the whole of this morning being devoted to a continuation of discussion on the subject. In addition to housing, caucus would be asked to consider the question of defence before it dispersed this evening.
