Drizzling rain made training conditions unpleasant for early workers at Wingatui, but during the breakfast interval weather conditions improved. The outside of the grass track, on which most of the fast work, was done, l)ecame faster. Little real work was done oh the plough track, which was in excellent condition. •

Royal Chief, who was sent seven furlongs, after covering the. first furlong in 12sec, was picked up by Settlement and then reached the half-mile in 48 3-ssec, the full journey occupying lmin 28 l-ssec.
