RAIN WOULD BE WELCOME

January has been quite a dry month in marked contrast to the wetness of December.' Wellington's rainfall this month has amounted to only 89 points, whereas the average rainfall for January is 289 points. Hence there has been a deficiency of exactly two inches. Whatever the amount of rain today or tomorrow, the average for the month is hardly likely to be reached. Gardens would appreciate a good rain to freshen them up, the drying winds experienced during the month and the abundance of sunshine combined to give , them a somewhat parched appearance. The official meteorological forecasters hold out prospects of some rain in the immediate future, while unofficial ones, seeing a halo round the sun yesterday, also prognosticate rain.
