SANDERS CUP
WELLINGTON WINS FIRST
RACE
OTAGO BOAT CAPSIZES
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, January 20. The first Sanders Cup race was sailed on Bluff harbour this afternoon in squally weather with, a strong westerly blowing. Wellington was first home. Times for the race were:r— Vanguard, 1.27.27, 1; Vorena (Southland), 1.29.49, 2;, Huia (Canterbury), 1.30.12, 3; Majorie (Auckland), 1.33.8, 4; Lavina (Stewart Island), 1.33.16, 5. Lynette, Otago, capsized after the first turn. The windward and leeward course was only five miles and a half long, because of the strong ebb tide. The first race was to have been held in the morning, but on the run up to the starting point 3kajorie struck a sandbank and capsized. The boat was towed to the wharf, where the minor damage was repaired, but her ill-luck was not yet finished. About 1 p.m. she broke loose from her moorings and drifted out into the harbour, a launch having to go out and' tow her back. The Southland crew lent Auckland a sail for the afternoon's contest. So difficult were conditions that; spinnakers were, set only once, and that was early in the race. Competitors for the most part used their leading jibs. Vanguard went into the lead at the second turn, and held it to the finish, though Vorena, responding well to the good seamanship of her crew, put in a strong challenge over the latter stages of the race. The issue, however, was never in doubt after the end of the second lap. Vanguard won well and deserved her win.
