LIKELY JUVENILE TALENT

GALLANT AMAZON SHOULD MAKE GRADE

(Special from "Irvington.")

January 20. A good deal of interest is centring in the progress of several two- and three-year-olds in work at Addingtpn, and already many have shown outstanding promise. The centre is rich in juvenile talent this year, more soj perhaps, than has been the case for some time. •■■■.. :

_The promising : three-year-old .trotter by Gallant Knight from Great Amazon has been named. Gallant Amazon, .and; h^ will probably make an appearance at the local matinee meetings to gain experience .in, his preparation for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes to be decided at the Timaru Meeting in March. A number of sportsmen have attempt-: ed to buy this juvenile,: but there, appears little, likelihood of his changing ownership. ',•',"■ ...

Honestus, the three-year-old halfbrother by Jack Potts to Plutus, is being worked along, at Belfast by C. S. Donald, and he is highly regarded by his connections. To date he has started only once, but he is expected to develop into a good racehorse. He is a colt of exceptionally fine quality, and his mariner" ■ of moving suggests that it will not be long before he is seen in a favourable light, although he will probably need a deal of time to be seen at his best. t

Among the younger brigade in M. B. Edwards's big team at Yaldhurst are several Jack Potts two-year-olds, and two of these in geldings from Endurance and Flossie Harvester, respectively, are well advanced in their education. The Endurance gelding has plenty of size and is a good mover, who impresses as likely to be a useful pacer later on when he has been given more time to develop. The other novice is rather small, but he shows a lot of quality and has come to his speed quickly. Both are well mannered and should do good service for their owners later on. The Flossie Harvester gelding, a brother to Philario, is owned by the Hon. G. R. Hunter and the Hon. P. C. Webb. ATTRACTING ATTENTION. | A two-year-old who is gaining favourable attention in his work on the New Brighton tracks is a gelding by Grattan Loyal from Daphne de, Oro, the dam of Special Edition. This youngster is well advanced in his preparation for classic racing, and has shown that he possesses both' speed and stamina above the average. He was given a run at the recent matinee meeting held on his home track and shaped exceptionally well, going away from the barrier smartly and pacing truly. He will race as Latest Edition. The two-year-old half-sister by Rey de Oro to Southern .Chief is reported to be making good progress under R. B. Berry's care. This filly was first; handled by J. J. Kennerley, and although she did little work for that trainer, she showed promise early and proved herself a natural pacer The latest addition to F. Holmes s i

team is Worthy Need, and this pacer is looking in excellent order. Although it is some time since he. ' displayed really attractive forth, last season he gave indications of being decidedly useful, arid a return to his-best would find him paying his way in His present class. ;. ,'■..-■■■■•■. -..•■•■•'■ ■■'■■

The double-gaited Llewellyn's Pet has been placed in J; Mcßride's stable, and she will probably be kept to the trotting department, in which she has shown a good deal of speed in her track work. This half-sister -to Impromptu has not been a great .success, but she has the ability to whva race or two. ■::. • •■-, .■■ . : ■ -'■--. •

Toorak continues, to race well without winning, and he is going close to establishing something of. a record for placings, having been in the •' minor money on 16 occasions since he won his last race over twelve months ago. Only bad luck has kept him off the winning list of late, and it cannot-be long before he enjoys a change of fortune. AQUA BOND iMPROVED.

Since joining S. A. Edwards's team at Addington Aqua Bond has made steady improvement, and it should not be long before she is advancing in the handicaps. At the moment she is not as reliable as could be wished away from the barrier, but she is settling down nicely, and has the speed and stamina to hold her own in her present class. Winner of last season's New Zealand Sapling Stakes, Bed Rock was given a race at Timaru last week, and although she failed to finish in the money she pleased her admirers. This was her \ second outing since her classic success, i and she will need little racing to return to her early form. •• [ L. Cavalier is handling a two-year-old i gelding by Great Bingen from Princess Napoleon, and this youngster, although, rather small, is proving very difficult to byeak in. He has the breeding and appearanqe of a useful horse, but it is going to take time to settle him down to track work. ■ ■ . Repose has made rapid advancement in recent weeks, and this juvenile is now shaping up like an early winner. She has always been capable of showing speed in her private work, but.it is only recently that she has taken her tasks seriously, and on her latest displays she is above the average of her 1 pt&Q ■ ■ ■ One of the most promising young trotters seen out in recent weeks is Patch's Discovery, and he can be expected to race prominently if taken to the Forßury Park Meeting next week. Although a winner,, he has had little experience, but he is a good beginner and races solidly.
