DEFAULTER AND THE CUP

The following letter was waiting on "Rangatira's" desk on his return from the first day's racing at Trentham on Thursday:—

Defaulter will not win the Cup today. Three of the following five will be in front of him: Arctic King, Wild Chase, Argentic, Dictate, The Bigot. Defaulter beat Willie Win, receiving 241b, Wild Chase 231b, Arctic King 241b in the Canterbury Cup, November 9. Today he gets only 51b from Wild Chase and he gives Arctic King 21b,. and meets them on 181b and 261b worse terms.

At Auckland he gave Peerless 31b, today 161b. In the Christmas Handicap (first day) he carried 8.11 (his Cup weight) and beat Dark Shadow, 7.5, who would be lost ,on the minimum in the Wellington Cup. Yet all writers and authorities swell the flood of adulation, and probably £100,000 will be lost on Defaulter today/ He will be a defaulter all right/

A postscript states that the letter was written at 9 o'clock on Thursday morning, and it refers to the date and time stamp that would be found on the envelope, which is January 19, 1939, 2 p.m. The Cup was run exactly one hour later, and doubtless this correspondent, who posted his letter at Wellington Railway Station, was present at Trentham in time to witness the race.
