MRS. ELLEN TILYARD
The death of Mrs. Ellen Tilyard, widow of Mr. Joseph Tilyard and the mother of well-known former Wellington and New Zealand representative Rugby players, occurred yesterday in her eighty-first year at her residence, 7 Kotinga Street, Kilbirnie. Mrs. Tilyard shared with her sons' their great love of Rugby football, a game which provided one of her main interests in life in and beyond her family circle.
Mrs. Tilyard leaves six sons and seven daughters. The sons all live in Wellington. They are-Messrs. Jim Tilyard (Captain of the New Zealand Rugby team which visited Australia in 1920), Fred Tilyard (1923 All Black), C. F. Tilyard (Wellington Rugby representative), Harry Tilyard (Wellington Rugby representative), and Messrs. William and J. C. Tilyard. _ The daughters are Mesdames L. de Jaunay (Auckland), AY M. Griffiths (Khandallah, mother of, the AH Black Mr. J. L. Griffiths), A. • Huttoii (Napier), A. Jacobsen (Wellington), J. Wilson (Wellington), M. McKenzie (Khandaliah), and T. RusselL (Khandallah).
There are, in addition, 24' grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Tilyard was born in Melbourne, but came to settle in Southland. She was married at Riyerton, arid later went to live at "Waralah, Tasmania. - In 1901 she returned to New Zealand, and from that year continued to live in "Wellington.
Not only has the Tilyard family been prominently associated with Rugby football in Wellington and^ New Zealand, but also, and more intimately, with the Poneke Club in this city. Both on the playing and administrative side the sons, have been identified with this old club for many years. Mr. Fred Tilyard has also given his services to the management of the ganie: as a whole in Wellington, and holds ' office as a member of the management commjttee of the Wellington Rugby Union.
The ; funeral; is to take place at Karori Cemetery on Monday morning, and among others who are to attend will"be representatives of the Wellington Rugby Football Unipn and the Poneke Club. :
