RED CROSS ACTIVITY

HOSPITAL CAFETERIA

A pleasant ceremony was held at the Wellington Hospital yesterday, the occasion being the break-up of the Red Cross Cafeteria, those present being Matron Clarke, Dr. Thorne, Mr. Labone, Mesdames O'Neill, Ivin, Thorne, Powers, and Watson, Vine, Petch, Angus, Beaufort, EUen, Baine, Thomas, Messrs. W. E. Labone, and M. S. Galloway.

The matron, Dr. Thorne and Mr. Labone spoke in appreciation of the work which the Red Cross ladies had, over the past eleven years, carried out on behalf of the patients at the hospital. During the year 19,700 people had gladly made use of the cafeteria, and all spoke highly of the service that had been given. The secretary of the Wellington Centre thanked Mesdames Ellen and Beaufort, honorary secretaries of the cafeteria, and the ladies associated with them for the regular and reliable manner in which they had attended and discharged their responsibilities. He expressed the hope that in the additions to the hospital which were contemplated adequate provision would be made for the cafeteria which had proved itself over the years undoubtedly a most important adjunct to the institution.

Recently the students from the New Zealand Institute for the Blind, Auckland, passed through Wellington, many of them journeying to the South Island on their Christmas vacation. They were met at the station ,by cars provided by the Red Cross Society, and local members were transported to their homes whilst those proceeding to the South Island were accommodated during the day at the Y.W.C.A. and Y.M.CA. In the evening the party going south was placed on the ferry boat All were guests at luncheon of the Wellington Blind Social Club.
