BASE FACILITIES
PROVISION AT AUCKLAND
The Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) stated today that Cabinet had approved of the provision of additional base facilities for the trans-Tasman service at Auckland.
A building, 160 feet long by 40 feet deep with a height of 30 feet, is being provided at Hobsonville, where the Empire flying-boats will be taken up on the slipway for repair and for removal and replacement of engines. A workshop building, 120 feet by 100 feet, is being provided at Mechanics' Bay for repairs to engines and airframes and for the housing of stores. A small engine testhouse is also being built at Mechanics' Bay and, in addition, an administration building is being provided for the booking offices for the operating company and meteorological offices.
The work is being undertaken by the Edwards Construction Company, and it is expected that a commencement on building operations will be made on January 4 and the necessary facilities will be ready in time for the commencement of the services.
The Auckland Harbour Board' is undertaking the provision of the necessary landing stage, pontoon, and gangways, and will also arrange to clear the site for the building contractor.
