FORMAL WELCOME

TRADE OFFICIAL

MR. A. G..C. DEUBER ARRIVES

A welcome to Mr. A. G. C. Deuber, who has been appointed assistant to the British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, was extended by the members of sic United Kingdom Manufacturers and New Zealand Representatives Association at a function yesterday afternoon. Mr. Deuber until recently held a similar post at Vancouver. The president of the association, Mr. David Hogg, presided, and in voicing a formal welcome, referred to the very pleasant relationship that existed between his association and the Trade Commissioner's office. Their objectives were very closely allied, Mr.. Deuber would find here, as in other parts of the world, difficulties in matters of trade, but New Zealand was a country of great potentialities, and the possibilities of trade between here and England were good. It would probably be greatly increased, particualrly if they could increase the population. Tariffs in New Zealand were as troublesome as they were in other parts of the world, but they would no doubt straighten themselves out. Mr. Hogg mentioned the experience of his principals at Home being driven out of the market because of tariffs. Owing to changes, however, they were now coming back on to the market, and he hoped that something would take place here. Mr. Hogg concluded by wishing the Trade Commissioner, Mr. R. Boulter, success on his pending trip to England. In reply, Mr. Deuber returned thanks for the reception and the opportunity of meeting members of the association. They had one objective, the development of trade with the United Kingdom, he said, and by getting together they should be able to achieve that aim, though, of course, there would be difficulties to overcome. Mr. Boulter endorsed the chairman's remarks regarding the relationship between his office and the association, and said he valued it very much. He intended to .visit the industrial centres when at Home, and he expected to receive many inquiries, as to what products could be marketed here.
