CATERPILLAR PEST
MAIZE CROPS DAMAGED
(Special to the ''Evening Post.")
GISBORNE, This Day,
A number of maize crops in the Gisborne district have been replanted be" cause of damage caused to the young plants by cateupillars. The attack* is reported to be severe in some localities, while in others it is light, some
places escaping altogether.
The present dry conditions appear to favour the caterpillar, for similar attacks have occurred during dry weather in the early part of the growing period. Owing to the absence of rain since planting most of the crops have not made very rapid progress. Late planting, combined with the damage by caterpillars, is expected to affect the yield.
In the meantime the market for the past season's crop continues to be comparatively quiet, with a normal demand for prompt -shipment. There have been some inquiries for forward delivery, but sellers appear to be disinclined to quote maize for forward delivery because buyers seem -to be interested only in the ruling price of 5s a bushel, f.0.b., Gisborne, whereas an increment on sales during the later months is expected by growers.
Supplies going forward appear to be adequate for consumption in Auckland.
