INDUSTRIAL COURT
ENGINEERS' DISPUTE
Minor points at issue between workers in the engineering and allied trades and the employers are at present being heard in the Industrial Magistrate's Court before Mr. J. A. Gilmour, Industrial Magistrate, preliminary to the issue of a new award. Agreement on the principal conditions to be contained in the new award had been reached previous to the hearing. Wages of skilled tradesmen are to be increased from 2s 6d to 2s 9d an hour and proportionate increases will apply to other classes of workers. The hours of work will remain unchanged at 40 a week.
Mr. T. O. Bishop is appearing for the employers, and Mr. G. T. Thurston for the New Zealand Amalgamated Engineers and Related Trades Industrial Union of Workers, who are acting jointly with the ; Boilermakers' Federation and the Moulders' Union.
The Court was occupied this morning, and this afternoon with a dispute over the application of certain employer parties to the award for exemptions from the wages and overtime provisions. These exemptions were granted in the previous award, but the employees are objecting to their continuance. The applicants for exemptions are oil companies, manufacturers of shearing and milking machinery, the Devonport Ferry Company, and the Colonial Sugar Company.
It is anticipated that the disputes will occupy the Court tomorrow,
