YACHT RACING

NATIONAL CUPS

WELLINGTON TRIALS

Thirty-one of Wellington's fastest centreboard yachts and their crews are to compete tomorrow and on Sunday, and at the following weekend in the trials to select. Wellington's representatives in the national sailing contests for the Sanders, Idle Along, and Cornwell Cups. Wellington at present holds, the Sanders and Idle Along Gups, and the Plimmerton Club has the Cornwell Cup.

The trial races are divided into three classes —for X class boats (Sanders Cup contenders). I class boats (Idle Alongs), and Z class boats (Cornwell Cup). X class and I class yachts are to sail in six races, one each on Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning, and Sunday afternoon each weekend, and the winner will be found by a points system. In addition the X class winner takes the Campbell Cup for the Wellihgton championship. For the Cornwell Cup the crew and boat are selected on the performances over a series of races to be, held with the other races.

Afternoon races for X class yachts will begin at 3 o'clock and morning races at 10.30. I class boats will start ten minutes later, and it is the** intention of the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association, which is conducting the trials, to start every race punctually. There will be no waiting for late a_.-*ivals. All races are to start and finish off Point Jerningham, between a shore flag and a buoy, and the progress of the racing will be clearly visible from the shore. Triangular and windward and leeward courses between 9 and 10 miles long are provided, both in Evans Bay and in mid-harbour. It is likely that if tomorrow's wind is a northerly the races will be over a triangular course in, Evans Bay. X class boats sail three rounds and I class two rounds.

The five-flag start system is to be used. All five will be hoisted five minutes before the start, and one is to be lowered each minute, the last one coming down at starting time. The Z class boats will be sailed by a different crew in every race, as in Cornwell Cup racing, and the two best men, not necessarily the same crew, are to be selected by Messrs. S. Reid. R. Bolland, and E. Hargreaves. Mr. F. Mumford will act as starter for the X and I class boats. Messrs. G. H. Tanner and L. Robertson will judge the (X class racing, and Messrs. D. Bell and R.
