RAIL-CAR SERVICE
PASSENGERS FOR UPPER
HUTT
In reply to a letter drawing attention to passengers being' left behind at Wellington by the 8.35 p.m. rail-car for Upper Hutt, Mr. A. E. Hargreaves, acting district traffic manager of New Zealand Railways,;-stated in a letter to last night's meeting: of the! Upper Hutt Borough Council that. ;on a. few occasions .two or-, three passengers had been left behind owing to the railcar being fully loaded.
Preference was given to. passengers for Siiverstream and north of -■■_.$/ but passengers for stations up to Lower Hutt were permitted to join the car close to starting time providing room was available. On the few occasion* that passengers fox Siiverstream or beyond had been left behind it had been observed that these passengers had arrived at the station when' the rail-car was due to start. It? would not be reasonable to request the" shorterdistance passengers, who had just received permission to join, to leave the car in favour of the late passengers.
The matter was referred to the public services committee.
