HOSPITAL GARDENERS
RETROSPECTIVE PAYMENT
Retrospective payment of wages from September 1 has been granted the Wellington Hospital gardeners and labourers in the new award. The only matter referred to the Arbitration Court was the date of the coming into force of the award. The award will operate for a year. Hours are to be eight daily on five days, from Monday to Friday. The hours of incinerator attendants may be spread over seven days within the forty hours, but overtime rates are to be paid for work done on bundays and holidays. One gardener or groundsman may be called on to cut flowers for the wards on Saturday morning, but this work is to be rostered and the worker is to receive four hours' leave of absence in return tor
Minimum wage rates are as follows: —Incinerator attendant, £5 10s; head groundsman-gardener, £5 15s; groundsmen and other general workers, £4 15s. Casual workers are to be'paid 2s 5d an hour. Nine statutory holidays have been granted and annual holidays are two weeks. Sick leave is at the rate of one week for every year of service, with a maximum of 24 weeks.
