IN NEW QUARTERS

PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

Housed for the first time in new quarters in the Dominion Museum, the Wellington Philosophical Society held its annual meeting last, night, Mr. A. E Hefford presiding over a sparse attendance. Members expressed much gratification with the room which has been set apart for meetings and with the shelving for the library. . .' . While the balance-sheet was being discussed, the question arose as to the utilisation of the accumulated library funds. Dr. W. P. Evans said that it was a positive disgrace that the sum of £460. should be to the credit of the library account: much of this money o^ght to have been spent on the acquisition of books and periodicals. " . ... It was left to the incoming council to decide what should be acquired for the library,'and the incoming council will also go' into the question of the purchase of suitable projecting apparatus. . . As president of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Dr. Evans presented the Augustus Hamilton Memorial Prize for 1937 to Dr. C. L. Hutton for his geological research in Otago.

Notice of motion was given proposing a change of name from the Wellington Philosophical Society to that of the Royal Society, Wellington branch. This will be discussed at a special general meeting to be called later. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. C. M. Smith; vice-presi-dents, Mr. A. E. Hefford and Mr. F. R. Callaghan; council, the presidents or chairmen of the astronomical, geological, biological, and technological sections of the society, together with* Dr. P. Marshal], Mr. F. W. Furkert, Dr. H. H. Allan, Dr. M. A. F. Barnett, Dr. L. Bastings, Mr. R. E. R. Grimmett, Mr. H. C. Heays, and Dr. E. Kidson; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. T. Salmon; hon. auditor, JVIr. A. B. Dymoete
