TROTTING BREVITIES

Win-and-place betting will operate at the Wellington Meeting on Saturday. The forward showing of Cavatina at her last start will assure the four-year-old of plenty of support in the novice races at Hutt Park. She has progressed SlVan Derby, gave a glimpse of his speed when he conceded the middleclass horses nearly a furlong start and then finished second at Auckland last Saturday. He made short work of the field on the second day. A bright future is predicted for the Australianbred pacer whe"n he settles down. M. Stewart did not take long to make his presence felt since setting up as a public trainer in the north, for. he won two races at Epsom last Monday with Civic and Navy Blue. Snowy Bingen will make a return to the pacing gait when he competes at Hutt Park. Since being taken over by J. F. Cotton he has been educated as a trotter, but. he is not yet properly experienced in the new sphere. The Australian pacer Logan Derby is stated to have settled down splendidly at Addington, and reports credit him with having retained his condition on the trip across the Tasman. He is nicely placed in the N.Z. Trotting Cup, but may be at the disadvantage of not having had a race before the big event comes up. Dick Redmond, of whom a good opinion is held in the north, ruined his chances at Epsom by failing to go steadily, and it was decided to allow him to forgo his engagement on the second day. He will be given a short spell. Perula, who will compete at Hutt Park, is very inbred, being by Giro, a son of Wrack, from Wrackaway, a daughter of Wrack. However, he has shown plenty of speed and may develop into a useful performer. Silver Guy claims the fastest twomile record of the competitors engaged in the October Handicap on Saturday, having covered the distance in 4min 24aec, this being a winning effort.

Gentleman Joe is not being allowed to eat the pats of idleness, and he returns to the pacing ranks at Banks Peninsula on Saturday. He is a doublegaited "horse who appears to be at home in either department.

F. C. Walker, who a couple of seasonsago was attached to Mr. A. J. B. Norris's stable as private trainer, is now acting in a similar capacity for the well-known Waikato sportsman Mr. W. Johnstone.
