HUTT PARK MEETING
FIELDS ANALYSED
TRACK LIKELY TO BE FAST
(By "Ariki Toa.")
The response received by the Wellington Trotting Club for its August Meeting augurs well for the success of the carnival on Saturday next, jind this is particularly pleasing in view of the splendid gesture by the club in advancing the fixture forward three weeks in order to avoid a clash with the Levin Racing Club. The wide and varied list of events have drawn : some of the best available middle-class talent in the Dominion, and everything seems in order for a feast of light-harness racing. One notable feature in connection With the list of acceptances for Saturday - i,s the lack of northern representation,'only one horse, Peter Smith, being, paid up. for. However, this should not detract from the lure of the sport,-for what is lacking in interisl&ha competition •■.' is made up in quality, .this being especially noticeable in the chief events. •There were three withdrawals from the October Handicap, namely, Sandusky; Sea Gift, and Southern Smile, and- there is still plenty of material remaining |pr a. thrilling:. contest. At present the ruling favourites. for the event are Ferry Post, Silver Guy, and Philafio, and the form of : the trio over recent weeks seems to warrant their position, at the. top of quotations. Of late years there has been an absence of potential two-mile pacers, and this term has revealed a wealth of talent in this direction and the horses mentioned above will need only to maintain their present rate of progress to graduate in Cup class. They are a trio of fine stayers and are in possession of splendid manners. The Encouraging form of (Navy Blue at Auckland last weekend will assure this speedy mare plenty of support in whichever event she contests on Saturday. In the past she has been seen to best advantage over sprint distances, but there is no reason for the contention that t she cannot stay; for she claims a wealth of staying blood on both sides of her pedigree. One factor in her favour is that there are few quicker beginners in the sport, and this should ensure her gaining a prominent position in the early stages and thus eliminating any. chance of interference when the tussle for positions takes place. A CONSISTENT PACER. Tporak will come in for plenty of attention at-Hutt Park if for no other reason . than that he is one of the most consistent. pacers in the sport. No matter how well or how fast he races he invariably strikes something a shade-better on the handicap, and place money is usually his share of the stake. In his last twelve starts he has scored only one win but has secured eight placings, which altogether must be most exasperating for his connections, especially when it is considered that he is working his way back in'the handicaps. According to reports from the south he has progressed' during the past few months, and if a win did go his way n6 succession the day would be more popular,. ~. . /.,,. The defection of Horse Power, San-dusky,-and Waipahi from the Electric Handicap,-which :is/ the open sprint or *%eeSh'a leg/'";has ] slightly'clarified the pdsition '■ in" that Marsceres and Navy Blue appear to .be the logical favourites over .this distance. Both have had the <■ benefit df recent racing, and being smart. beginners can be relied upon. to; secure \a prominent position early and dispute the issue all the way. .. No doubt the running in the principal event will furnish a further guide for. course, investors, but at preent- it seems hard to go . past Marsceres,- Navy.- Blue, and Silver Guy. Fresh horses in Agile, Iraq, and Southern. Smile will also add interest to the sprint race, for all are proved sprinters, and Iraq • has previously given Hutt Park patrons a. taste of his speed. Southern Smile has been racing over long distances during the past few months, but there is little doubt that she is not a dyed-in-the-wool stayer and is better suited by shorter journeys. . X A pleasing feature of the programme is the splendid list of unhoppled trotters down to compete, and it is doubtful if a better all-round lot' have yet. assembled at the Park. Naturally: the issue is well concealed, and it is probable that betting will take a wide range. Sylvan. Timwbrthy; Dollar Maid, Tonee. and Biworthy .have all been on the winning list during the past six months, and their form since has also been encouraging. \ - A3tf ADDED ATTRACTION. An attraction in itself will be the appearance; of Harold Logan in the
October Handicap. It is admitted that he can have no earthly ,chance off 120 yards, but all the same his showing will create a lot of interest in view of the fact that he still retains his ground in the New Zealand Trotting Cup next month. No line could be gained on his ability at the recent Auckland Meeting, for he was handicapped out of the race, and never got near enough to make any impression. As the winner Noble Prince ran 3min 18sec off the front it can easily be seen the magnitude of the task set Harold Logan. The minor pacing races have all attracted .plenty of competitors, and here again the issues are open. One of the best prospects among the improvers may be Taruna, who was very unlucky to be beaten into third place at Hutt Park last month. On that occasion he was clear of the opposition half-way down the straight, and really the issue was decided when he struck a soft patch of ground and went to a bad, break, which immediately eliminated his chances of collecting first prize. Reports from Addington state that he has progressled since, and there is every reason to anticipate a return to the winning list for M. Holmes's charge. It is unlikely that Ma'zaire will be supported with the same confidence as in the maiden eyents last month,, but all the same his chances cannot be lightly assessed. He ruined whatever prospects he may have possessed in the mile and a,quarter event by breaking at the start, but it was no, fault of his that he got into trouble in the longer distance race. When Lady Vasclyne fell she interfered with Cavatina. and Mazaire, who was following the latter, had to run right off the course to escape the trouble. Even after losing fully 60 yards he was equal to finishing about sixth, and there was a good deal of merit m the performance. He is none too. reliable at the start, but should he begin correctly in either race on Saturday he will set the other novices a dimClSpeS attention has been given to the track by the caretaker of late, and cr c shiu?isf &*& Too petit of oSe conditions that -prg when the receipts are balanced.
