THE CESAREWITCH
HUTT PARK TRACK
L. BERKETT'S TEAM HERE
(By "Ariki Toa. M)
Conditions were ideal for training at Hutt Park this morning, but there was j very little work of a fast nature. / The poles were 40ft out. As the result of the break in the weather recently the track has dried out splendidly, and providing there is not a great deal of rain during the next day or so the course proper is likely to be hard and j fast on Saturday. Guy Zolock was not on a timemaking basis in an essay over a mile and a half, but increasing the speed was timed to cover the last half-mile in Imin lOsec He has got through a good preparation and looks bright and healthy. Snowy Bingen was sent a mile and a half, and came home in 3min 42sec, the last half-mile taking Imin 10 l-ssec. He hit out freely throughout and appears to have settled down a lot. Prince McElwyn and Playful were associated over a mile and a half, but they were not doing their best to traverse the distance in 3min 45sec, the last half-mile in Imin 14sec. Biworthy and Diltest were not required to give of their best to complete a mile and a half in 3min 50see, averaging the same speed practically all the way. Biworthy looks a picture of health. First Shake, Mabel Chimes, Allworthy, and Ropata were sent away on terms from the mile and a quarter post, but the work-out was spoilt by Allworthy and Ropata breaking at the start and losing a lot of ground. First Shake led all the way and ran 3min 1 3-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 8 3-ssec. She did her work well through-
out. Allworthy made up a lot of ground to finish within a length of First Shake, and Mabel Chimes trotted without mistake.
De Reske put in several rounds at a useful pace but was not asked for speed. He appears to have done a lot of work. .
The only arrivals to date are L. F. Berkett's team comprising Sylvan, Cavatina, and Tonee. All look well.

ANOTHER FRENCH SUCCESS
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received October 27, 2 p.m.) LONDON, October 26. On the second day of the Newmarket Houghton Meeting, the following was the result of the
CESAREWITCH STAKES, a sweepstakes ■ ) with £1500 added; second £350, third £150; 2* miles. Princesse de Faucighy-Lucinge's Contrevent, 3yrs, 6.8 > 1 J. P. Hornung's br c Dubonnet, by Papyrus—Chincona, 3yrs, 7.7. .. 2 E. Benson's br g Fet, by Son-in-Law—Valda, 7yrs, 7.8 ........... 3 Twenty-eight started. Won by a length and a half, with the third horse a similar distance back. Winner bred and trained in France. Time, 3min 23sec.
Contrevent's success in the Cesarewitch Stakesy orie of the principal han* dicap events for the stayers in the season in England, completes a remarkable double for French>bred. horses, both of whom were Jittle known at the time of their entry. Two weeks ago M. Jacques Meller's five-year-old Helleniqua won the Cambridgeshire with 6.9, and now the three r year-old Contrevent takes the other "leg" of the autumn double under 6.8. The very weight those . horses were awarded tells, under' English principles of handicapping, that neither has done anything of note in his own country. Princesse He Faucigny-Lucinge some years ago produced another surprise on English racegoers when her colt Rodosto won the Two Thousand Guineas. Fet, who finished third this year, won the race two years ago and was beaten only by Punch last year. No horse has ever won the Cesarewitch twice, though the race was established in 1839.— "Rangatira."
