FAIR TO FINE

BUT CLOUD INCREASING

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Light to moderate but gradually freshening north-easterly to northerly winds. Weather fair to fine with mild temperatures, but cloud increasing. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for north-easterly to northerly winds.. These will be light to moderate generally, but will freshen. The weather will be fair to fine at first everywhere, but in western districts cloud will gradually increase and rain will set in j after about twenty-four hours. Temperatures will be mild. As far as the weather was concerned Labour Day came a day too early, for yesterday was a fine day over the whole of the Dominion, the only rain to be reported being from Puysegur Point, wheue there was a fall of five points. Anticyclonic conditions have prevailed, the centre of highest pressure moving last night across the Auckland peninsula. North-easterly 'winds have blown along the East Coast of the South Island, but otherwise south-westerlies have prevailed. During last Eight, however, winds went round to the north-east or north except over the northern half of the North Island. Although the good weather was still general this morning, the fine spell will probably not last much longer in western districts. An extensive depression which has caused widespread rain in eastern Australia during the last few days now appears to be moving over the Tasman Sea, and it has already caused barometers to fall in the southern parts of the Dominion. Auckland's weather yesterday was fine and sunny with a moderate southwesterly wind. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 64.1 and 47.2 degrees respectively. Although there was passing cloud, Wellington had 12.6 hours of bright sunshine. Conditions were very pleasant, winds being quite light and from the north-west. A similar type of weather was prevailing this morning. Yesterday's maximum and minimum temperatures were 60.5 and 45.5 degrees. Christchurch also had an excellent day, but cloud increased last night. There was a moderate north-easterly sea breeze, and temperatures during the day were warm, the maximum being 61 degrees and the minimum 46.5 degrees. In Dunedin a light southerly current from the Foveaux Strait region slowly advanced and reached the city about noon 3 but the wind this morning was a light north-easterly again. The weather yesterday was sunny, with passing clouds, but it has since become overcast.
