TENSION IN MEMEL
UNREST AMONG GERMANS
FEAR OF "BACK-TO-THE-REICH" DEMAND
GROWING AGITATION
By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, October 22. The atmosphere in Memel is so tense that the campaign for the defence of the city's loosely-defined autonomy could easily be transformed into a "back-to-the-Reich" demand.
The white stockings marking the Sudeten Germans are now seen on Memel Germans, who are .most indignant at the decision of the Governor of Memel to veto the Diet laws intended to prevent an influx of Lithuanians to the. city who would intensify unemployment.
The Germans maintain that the labour laws are within the competence of the local authorities. The Lithuanians declare that they do not conform with the principles of the Lithuanian statute.
The Memel correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph" declares that, whatever the legal rights may be, the Lithuanians are mistakenly providing the Germans with a further ground for agitation. The Germans are now claiming, that the Lithuanians have proved their determination to prevent the proper operation of autonomy.
