TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP

WON BY WELLINGTON

Wellington won the teams championship in the V.M.C.A. gymnastics championships, held at the gymnasium of the V.M.C.A., Willis Street, on Saturday. A high standard of gymnastics was shown by all three competing teams, Wellington, Wanganui, and Nelson. Hamilton and Palmerston North wtsre prevented from competing by measles.

All competitors were thoroughly fit and the exercises were performed with alacrity and precision. In addition to exercises on the parallel bars, horizontal bars, vaulting horses, and rings, the teams performed sets of mat tumbling exercises and calisthenics.

In the teams championship Wellington scored 604 points. Last year's champions, Nelson, were runners-up with 513 points, and Wanganui scored 418 points. J. Lawson, Wellington, with 214 points, won the individual championship. R. Muncaster, Nelson (182 points) was runner-up, R. Sisson, Wanganui (180 points), was third, and E. McConchie, Wellington (177 points), was fourth.

A strenuous basketball match between Wellington and Nelson teams was won by the former by 48 goals to 7.

Opening the competitions, the acting chairman of Wellington Y M.C. A. physical committee, Mr. A. R. Thomas, welcomed the visiting teams. Physical culture, he said, formed an important part of V.M.C.A. activities, and it was encouraging to note the interest being taken in it by the younger members of of the classes.

Commenting on the competitors' performances, Mr. E. W. Herbert, director of the Sydney College of Physical Education and Recreation, said that fine work had been done on all types of apparatus. He was particularly pleased to see that the gymnasts topic a serious interest in tumbling, an exercise which was, he thought, more beneficial than was commonly supposed. In his lectures to V.M.C.A. physical directors at the training school to be held in Wellington from October 25 to November 5, he would introduce a new type of gymnastic exercise which should have greater popular appeal than those practised at present,. Mr. Herbert added. The judges were Messrs. C. R. Bach, G. Harkness, C. Postgate, and E; W. Herbert, B.P.E.
