EASTBOURNE CLUB
The weather was fine for the opening of the Eastbourne Bowling Club, and there was a good attendance. Mr. A. James, the president, in declaring the club open, referred to the great improvements and alterations which had been made and to the enthusiasm shown by members. "The main green and the grounds are all in very good order, and the additional area purchased by the club last year has been completely transformed," he said.' "This section was a tough proposition as it was far from level, and was covered with large trees, scrub, and blackberry bushes, while hundreds of yards of rock and spoil had to be removed. Some fifty bags of soil were sterilised for topdressing-, and the grass is well up on the four rinks provided. It is expected that the new green will be available for play early in the new year. Mrs. James sent up the first jack. Mr S W. Lodge, who is the oldest member of-the club in-years, threw up the first bowl. Mr. Lodge is believed to be the oldest colt in New Zealand, as he is 88. and started playing only the year before last.
