BOWLING

SEASON OPENED

WELLINGTON CLUB

The Wellington Bowling Club opened its season-on Saturday afternoon, and in spite of the unfa 'ourable weather there was a large attendance of members, visiting bowlers, and their friends. The ceremony was performed by the president, Mr. A. H O'Donnell.

Mr. O'Donnel] welcomed the visitors and said he was gratified to see so many ladies present, as it indicated the interest they were taking in the club. He read messages from Messrs. A. Fletcher (who is in Australia), Parton, and E- J. Hill (the only life member). Mr. O'Donnell mentioned the names of several members who had passed away since last season, and members stood in silence for a few moments out of respect for their memory. Mr. O'Donnell said that the greens were in excellent order and thanked Messrs. W. J, Thompson and Wicks for the excellent work done. He also paid a tribute to the work of the greenkeeper. He announced that trophies had been presented to the club by Messrs. Bruce, Thompson, Popple, and J. E. Taylor. Mr. O'Donnell said that this season games had been arranged for non-pennant players on days when pennants were being played, and it was also hoped to have a social match between past and present executives and the rest of the club.

The president of the Wellington Bowling Centre (Mr. M. J. Casey) wished the club every success for the season. He pointed out that the centre was indebted to the club for many acts of kindness. The silver kitty was thrown up by Mrs. O'Donnell, .and Mr. A. Hamilton, the club's oldest member, rolled up the first bowl. No play took place.
