AJAX BEATS ROYAL CHIEF

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, October 23. Ajax won the W. S. Cox Plate at the Moonee Valley Cup Meeting on Saturday, defeating Royal Chief by two lengths. It was Ajax's twelfth win in succession, a sterling effort. Royal Chief finished brilliantly. He conceded the winner fifteen lengths over the last six furlongs. He greatly enhanced his Melbourne Cup prospects. Amigo disappointed. L'Aiglon made a fair effort. Ortelle's Star's consistency was rewarded when he beat the fastfinishing Aitchengee in the Moonee Valley Cup. Queen of Song had every show in the Cup, as did her "stablemate Aranui in the first division for colts of the St. Albans Handicap. Aranui was never dangerous. Top Row failed to show up in the Dundonald Handicap. Nuffield moved freely in a gallop after the races. Results were: —

Eleven started. L'Aiglon was fourth and Catalogue sixth. Amigo was last. Won by two lengths, with a head between second and third horses. Time, lmin 56|sec —a course record.

Elliott) ........ 2 Gay Knight, 8.1 (H. Skidmore)'.... 3 Twelve started. Bachelor King was fourth, and Queen of Song sixth. Won by a neck, with a length between second and third horses. Time, 2min 45sec.

Royal Chief's engagements at the Victoria Racing Club's Meeting opening next Saturday include the MacKinnon Stakes (1£ miles) and Cantala Stakes (1 mile) on the first day; Melbourne Cup on the second day, Linlithgow Stakes (1 mile) on the third day; and C.
