GOLF

WINTER CUP TOURNEY

EWEN AND GRAHAM IN FINAL

Two young players, I. A. Ewen and J. B. Graham, reached the final of the Winter Cup golf tournament at the Hutt Club this morning by winning the semi-final matches in good style. Ewen defeated R. G. Holland, holder of the cup, by 5 and 4, and Graham defeated H. A. Black, runner-up last year, by 3 and 1.

Ewen was one under 4's when he finished his match by sinking a sensational 72-foot putt from the edge of the fourteenth green for a birdie 3. He had the advantage of Holland throughout the match, mainly because of excellent driving and long and accurate approaches. Holland developed a cut in his tee shots, and at the second, when he skied into the pines, he took an 8. He was 2 down at the turn, lost the tenth, and, though he halved the eleventh and twelfth, a fine putt by Ewen on the thirteenth spelled the end. Black and Graham were all square at the turn, Graham taking 38 and Black 39. In the second half, Graham began to score with longish putts, arid he ended the match at the seventeenth with a very good 8-footer for a birdie 3. Black continued steadily, though, at [the fifteenth, when his drive found the rough, he was in trouble, and lost j the hole. He saved the sixteenth by stymieing Graham. At the. seventeenth, however, he topped his second, and was some distance short with his third. Results are:— WINTER CUP. Semi-finals. > ■• I. A. Ewen beat R. G. Holland, 5 arid 4; J. B.
