PHYSICAL EDUCATION

GROWING MOVEMENT

HIGH TRAINING STANDARD

Without leadership trained in the sciences of biology, psychology, and sociology there is a danger of producing more problems than can be solved in providing suitable recreational facilities, says Mr. E. W. Herbert, B.P.Ei, Director of the Leadership Training College of Physical Education and Recreation, Sydney, who is in Wellington to conduct a refresher course for physical directors arid other officers of the V.M.C.A. The course will be held from October 25 to November 5, and has been arranged I by the national council of the V.M.C.A.

The Sydney college has a regular staff of five fully-qualified teachers, and lectures are given by leading authorities in New South Wales. It is based on the American model and trains leaders in physical education . nd recreation for positions in schools, playgrounds, and community, centres, and since its establishment three years ago has produced thirty graduates. "New South Wales has been the first of the Australian States to make a real effort to. solve the problem of providing suitable facilities for physical education and recreation," says Mr. Herbert. An v advisory council has been established and has drawn up a list of activities to be undertaken. These include publicity work, the coordination of the work of various organisations, the training of leaders, the provision of apparatus, and research .The advisory council is watching developments in this field in New Zealand with keen interest. The Education Department of Victoria recently inaugurated a course in physi-j cal education, at Melbourne University, and the South Australian Government is reported to be contemplating the establishment of. a comprehensive scheme similar to those of New South Wales and New Zealand.
