WEEKEND TOLL
HUSBAND AND WIFE KILLED
HEAD-ON COLLISION*
, (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ; AUCKLAND, October 23. Two people were killed when their motor-car collided head-on with a lorry, on the main road about six miles. north of Te Kuiti on Saturday evening. The victims were Thomas James Dixqn, driver of the car, sawmiller, of Horokino, near Mangapehi, aged 29, and his wife, Margaret Ellen Dixon,. aged about 28.
Robert Dixon, brother of Thomas Dixon, received a broken nose and minor injuries.
The son and. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dixon, aged six and nine respectively, were also in the car. They and a friend, Myrtle Marie Budd, aged 15, suffered from shock.
The driver of the lorry, Ronald Thomas Adamson, of Karioi, near Ohakune, escaped injury.
The car, whose occupants were returning from a visit to relatives at Hangatiki, was travelling south when the accident occurred, and had just come out of a bend on to a straight stretch when it collided with the lorry travelling in the opposite direction.
The leading.end of the tray of the lorry struck the windscreen of the car on the driver's side and tore through from end to end. Mr* and Mrs. Dixon,' who were seated on the right-hand side.of the car, were decapitated. After the impact, the car continued for about 100 feet along the road and <:arne to rest on the left-hand side at right angles to the road. The lorry was pulled up within , a short distance.
*. Mrs. Dixon was thrown on to the road, and Mr. Dixdn hurled into the back seat.
