HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED

A five-roomed house at Horokiwi owned by Mr. J, Kirkwood, Petone, and occupied by Mr. D. Sykes, a builder's labourer, his wife, and family, was completely destroyed by fire between 7.15 and midnight last night. Nothing was saved.

The occupant and his family were in Petone visiting friends during the evening and when they arrived back they found their, home a , heap of smouldering ashes. Shelter was given for the night in a neighbour's house.

As far as is known the house and furniture were insured.

The Horokiwi district which is reached from the Hutt Road about' a mile south of the Petone railway crossing is sparsely-populated and Mr. Sykes's home was hidden by hills from the nearest house, a quarter of a mile away.
