FENCING

WELLINGTON V. H.M.S.

ACHILLES

The rooms of the Wellington Sword Club was the scene of special enthusiasm on Tuesday evening, as it marked the last meeting of foil and sabre teams from the combined swords clubs of Wellington and H.M.S. Achilles, which will be leaving for England shortly ._ In previous matches the honours in foils had been with Wellington, whilst in sabre H.M.S. Achilles had been superior. It was pleasing, therefore, in this last encounter that H.M.S. Achilles won the foil by eleven matches to five. The sabre was drawn, eight matches all, although on points the Wellington team scored well.

In all matches the standard of play was noticeably, high, there being none of the rough play that has- occurred in previous encounters. The match between Harcourt and Page was the outstanding one of the evening in cleanness and neatness of play.

At the close of the evening, Godfrey Harcourt, captain of the Wellington Swords Club, expressed the thanks and appreciation of all Wellington fencers for the help and enthusiasm shown by the members of the team from H.M.S. Achilles, and on behalf of the fencers he wished the visitors "good luck" on t leaving New Zealand. In his reply, Leading Seaman Page thanked Wellingtonfor their hospitality, then and in the past, and wished the clubs of Wellington a good fencing future. He then called for three cheers for Wellington, which returned the compliment with acclamation. The results of the matches were as follows:— FOIL. H.M.S.
