STATE TAXIS
MINISTER'S DENIAL
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, October 12
.; A denial that the Railways Department had taken out taxi licences in Wellington or that it intended to do so, was given today by the Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) when .commenting on a statement by Mr. A. N. Grigg, National Party candidate for Mid-Canterbury, that the Department had obtained three licences to run taxis between the wharves and Wellington hotels.
"I wish to say it is not a fact that the Department has taken out any taxi licences in Wellington, nor does it contemplate doing so," said the Minister. "There is therefore not the slightest grourid, so far as tbe Department is concerned, for the statement attributed to Mr. Grigg, nor is there any ground whatever for apprehension by taxidrivers or firms engaged in this business in Wellington regarding the possibility of the Department entering into competition with them by running taxis in Wellington."'
