FEWER DAIRY COWS

STOCK TOTALS IN 1938

Though preliminary figures for livestock iii the Dominion in 1938 show record numbers for cattle, breedingewes, and sheep, the number of dairy cows and pigs has shown a decrease over last year.

Cattle have increased from 4,352,136 to 4,468,367, breeding-ewes from 19,332,077 to 19,663,866, and sheep from 31,305,818 to 32,378,774. Dairy cows in milk are down 43,784 on last year's total of 1,784,820, and dry cows have fallen from 126,269 to 105,108. The number of pigs this year is 747,562, compared with 794,758 last year. The number of horses shows that the upward swing which commenced in 1936 is being maintained, this year's total of 265,260 being 475 greater than in 1937.
