WORKERS' SAVINGS
INCREASED DEPOSITS
Addressing about sixty electors at Worser Bay last night, the Hon. R. Semple referred to statements being made regarding the insecurity of deposits in the Post Office Savings Bank. Three years ago the electors had been told that their savings would be insecure under Labour. Actually under the. last Government the people had been forced to, spend their savings so that they could secure sustenance.
Under Labour, said Mr. Semple, an additional £13,700,000 had been deposited in the Post Office Savings Bank, and the total of deposits was a record for New Zealand. Many who were on sustenance three years ago now had deposits in the Savings Bank.
Mr. Semple produced advertisements published three years ago and said they had been paid for by the money of bankers and stock and station agents. What was the answer to that? he asked. The people had shown their confidence in the bank.
